Herd Update February 2016

General Details

  • Herd test completed last week and all clear
  • Farm soil sampled this week, results due back in 2 weeks
  • First 30 cows to calve vaccinated for scour
  • Preparing for calving this week
  • Student started work placement this week (12 week placement)
  • Met vet last week to discuss calving protocols

Grassland Details

  • Average farm cover 825 kg DM/day on 18th November
  • Soil temperatures in Athenry currently 4.8 degrees
  • Plan to do opening cover next Monday 8th February

Housing/Nutrition details

  • All cows receiving pre-calving minerals at rate of 100 grams/head/day
  • All meal feeding to weanlings has now ceased to avail of compensatory growth when turned out to graze
  • Replacement heifers to remain on 1kg/head/day
  • Second cut silage pit opened and being fed

Key recommendations for this week

  1. Finish cleaning calving pens in preparation for calving
  2. Cease all meal feeding to weanlings
  3. Replacement heifers to remain on 1kg/head/day
  4. Currently cows penned according to BCS and feed is being restricted to cows over 4 BCS
  5. Cows being fed straw 3 days each week
  6. Weanlings to be weighed this week
