Herd Update 07.11.16

General Details

  • All cows have been weaned
  • The average weaning date for  all of the  Newford weanlings  is the 18th October
  • The average weaning weight for the males is 308 Kgs. ( ADG from Birth is 1.26 Kgs)
  • The average weaning weight for the heifers is 298 Kgs (ADG from Birth is 1.19 Kgs)
  • All weanling’s are on 2kgs of meal and were house on the 28th October
  • The average housing weight for the males is 332kgs ( ADG from Birth is 1.25 Kgs)
  • The average housing weight for the heifers is 316kgs ( ADG from Birth is 1.19 Kgs)
  • 8 steers were slaughtered last week @ 19 months – average 354kg carcass – 7 R grades and 1 U grade – Kill-out 52%
  • 17 heifers were slaughtered @ 19 months – average 303kg carcass – 14 R’s, 2 U grades and 1 O= Kill out 51%
  • No more mastitis cases from the dry cows - slats scraped down and lime spread on the slats daily until weaning is over
  • Cull cows have been penned together and are getting 3kg of meal at the moment. Average weight 634kgs
  • 22 in-calf heifers on the contract rearing programme have returned home to the Newford farm.
  • 99% of the grazing ground is closed on the main home platform

  • Average farm cover 560 kg DM/day
  • Average growth rate 18 kg/DM/Ha
  • Average Demand 1 kg/DM/Ha
  • Grazing grass ( Kg DM/ Ha ) grown in 2016 10,110 Kgs
  • Silage ( Kg DM / Ha ) grown in 2016 3,662 Kgs
  • Total Grass Growth ( Kg DM/Ha ) 13,772 Kgs

Suckler Herd

  • Need to  monitor all cows body condition weekly

Key recommendations for this week

  1. Keep a close eye on dry cows for mastitis problems
  2. Monitor in-calf heifers after returning home – will receive first (of 2) salmonella vaccine shot
  3. Scrape down slats daily and apply some lime
  4. Monitor the weanlings for any health issues
  5. Cows to be weighed and condition scored then penned accordingly
  6. All cows will receive their liver fluke and lice treatment
  7. All the weanling are too received their liver fluke, worms and lice treatment
