Herd Update 13.06.16

General Details

  • Grass growth is still very good with more surpluses taken out last week
  • First pregnancy scan of cows and heifers to take place this week
  • Reseeding taking place on paddock 15 (1.5 Ha) took place this week
  • Calves weighed on 2nd June
  • Male calves weighed 138kg gaining 1.24kg/day
  • Female calves weighed 129kg gaining 1.14kg/day

Grassland Details

  • Average farm cover 928 kg DM/day on 8th June
  • Average growth rate 63 kg/DM/Ha over past 7 days
  • Average Demand 60 kg/DM/Ha
  • Currently 15 days ahead
  • Current stocking rate: 4.85 L.U/Ha
  • Soil temperatures in Athenry currently 17 degrees
  • Took out another 6 paddocks last week and so far there is 190 surplus bales made off paddocks. Will be taking out more paddocks next week if weather allows
  • Slurry to be spread on all silage fields early next week

Breeding details

  • Teaser bulls turned out on Thursday 28th April
  • Breeding started in cows on Friday 29th April
  • Cows being inseminated at mid-day each day by commercial AI technician
    • Cows in 2 main groups
    • 1 group of first and 2nd calvers (ZGM)
    • 1 group of mature cows (FSZ/CKH)
  • Breeding started in heifers on Mon 25th April and 25/25 (100%) served by Wednesday 8th June
  • Currently very good submission rates with breeding starting on Saturday 30th April and 84/88 cows served by Friday 10th June
  • Stock bulls go out this week, Heats will still be recorded
