Herd Update 21.08.17

General Detail

  • Ground conditions have deteriorated significantly with some poaching in paddocks – utilisation is very poor as a result.
  • Started creep feeding calves 24th August. Paddock wires are being raised with white  plastic sticks to allow calves to move out to the next paddock to get at the troughs (16% protein ration)
  • First of the Newford weanlings will be weaned early to mid-September – 15 culls will be weaned first and sold off farm as soon as weaning is complete. (Priority to build grass)
  • Meal feeding commenced on the 28th July to heifers (42) and they are getting 5kg of concentrate at grass. The aim is to have some gone in early September.
  • Meal feeding commenced on the 9th August for 20 bullocks and they are getting 5kg of concentrate at grass .Their average weight is 563Kgs and their ADG is 1kg/day. Grass demand has slowed up since the introduction of meals
  • The in-calf replacement heifers and heifer calves were weighed on Monday 21st August and their target/summary weights are as follows

Breeding Details

  • Second calver with her twin bull calves – 257kg and 241kg gaining   1.25kg & 1.16kg since birth. The mother is scanned back again with twins. In-calf to Wilodge GoldCard              (LM4050)

  • Target pre grazing paddocks at 1450 Kg DM (kg DM/Ha).

Key recommendations for this week

  1. Keep silage covers on pit tight
  2. Check calves for pneumonia
  3. Keep tetany buckets out with cows
