Herd Update 15.08.16

General Details

  • Castration took place 2 weeks ago with no adverse effects
  • 22 bullocks and 30 finishing heifers were drafted in G-N-H that will finish off grass. The plan is to start them on 2kgs concentrates/head/day and slaughter as they become fit over the next few weeks. The remainder will not start meal feeding yet
  • This year’s straw purchased this week
  • Scanning completed with good results
  • Finishing heifers group weighed 475kg on 27th July and gained .83 kg/day since 27th April
  • Finishing steers group weighed 513kg on 27th July and gained 1.03 kg/day since 27th April
  • Bull calves weighed 215kg on 26th July and have gained 1.32kg/ day since birth
  • Heifer calves weighed 197kg and gained 1.19 kg/day since birth

Grassland Details

  • Average farm cover  852 kg DM/day on the  28th June
  • Average growth rate 39kg/DM/Ha over past 7 days
  • Average Demand 45 kg/DM/Ha
  • Currently 19 days ahead
  • Current stocking rate: 3.36 L.U/Ha
  • Current stocking rate in kg/ha: 2258 kg/Ha
  • Grass growth holding well with growth staying around demand
  • Paddock 15 was spray to kill off the  weeds and will be grazed shortly
  • Paddock 16 was been spray off and is ready to reseed
  • Paddock 31 was been sown last week in G-N-H

Breeding details

  • Scanning was done on the 10th August. 86 cows in calf out of possible 88 put to bull
  • 23 heifers out of 25 heifers went in calf in Tuam.
  • 57 cows and 23 heifers to clave in first 6 weeks of 2017 calving season (73%)
  • Cull cows will be finished off grass in next few weeks

Key recommendations for this week

  1. Faecal sample all cattle groups to determine worm dose requirements
  2. Commence meal feeding in forward finishing group in Gort na hAbhainn
  3. Finish reseeding paddock 16 in Newford
  4. Spread 1 bag/acre 27.N CAN over most of the farm this week to build grass covers
  5. Start grazing Raheen Wood (silage fields) with aim to graze for 2 rounds and close on first week of October
